7 Things I Learned at Biz Camp

I've gone to camp three times in my life...

  • Girl Scout camp (where I bunked with a girl who performed on Broadway as an orphan in Annie)

  • High school band camp (where's the clarinet emoji?)

  • East Coast Chinese Family Camp (imagine 400 Chinese American folks taking over a Jewish summer camp playing hard core ping pong, tennis, and square dancing)

But none of them compare to the virtual biz camp hosted by my mentor Selena Soo last week.

Despite having to deal with chronic zoom fatigue and a 7am start time, I went ALL IN.

We didn't get t-shirts, but we did get advance copies of Mike Kim's book You Are the Brand.

I left with pages of insights but 7 ideas stood out that I'm excited to share with you:

1️⃣ Never tell a story without a point. And never give a point without a story. (Mike Kim)

If you've got personal stories that can inspire or educate your audience, share them. And if you've got a point to make, follow it up with an example to help people see it.

2️⃣ If it’s 99 percent yes, it’s still a no. (Pam Dibbs)

This tip is restoring precious hours back to my life to focus on what matters most to me.

3️⃣ Get a PhD in You. (Julie Reisner)

Do you need more skills? Probably not. Most difference makers would benefit more from uncovering your big WHY, your unique value, your zones of genius, your story.

4️⃣ Marketing isn’t about closing a sale, it’s about opening a relationship(Mike Kim, again)

Develop authentic, trusting relationships with your audience and revenue naturally follows.

5️⃣ Proudly wear your INNER wardrobe. (Urvi Patel)

What's an inner wardrobe? To me, it's what makes you – YOU. The true brand story that honors your calling, brings forth your unique talents, offers a point of view that no one else in your industry has.

6️⃣ Your business is a spiritual experience. (Selena Soo)

Our businesses, like our lives, will push big buttons and challenge us to grow into our best selves. So if you're uncomfortable, chances are good you're on the right track.

7️⃣ The voice that says, "you're not enough" is not just talking to you, it's lying to all of us. (Me)

We were challenged to post "5 Things I'm Afraid to Tell You." Guess what? Everyone, including people who've been featured in Forbes, published books, or hobnobbed with Oprah, or earned multi-7 figures all confessed to not feeling qualified enough to be in the group.

Are you ready to make a pinky promise with me for the sake of your business?

I promise that:

  • If a personal story will inspire or educate our clients, we'll dare to share it

  • If it's not a full-body yes, we'll say "no"

  • If a voice inside says, "I'm not enough," we'll send it on a plane to Maui (Girl, bye)

If you're in, email me a "hell, yes.
